Why I Became a Teacher

I have always excelled at communication and was always one of the strongest students at English amongst my peers. This led me to pursue an undergraduate degree at the University of Wales, Swansea,UK in English literature. I graduated with honors and knew that I wanted to make a difference to people's lives, having been inspired by the difference those in education can make to other people's lives.

I had always wanted to travel and had taken a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) module as an undergraduate. This gave me the idea to expand my horizons and I decided to research about teaching abroad. I found that I absolutely loved the job and found myself signing again every year to renew my contract.

I remained in Ulsan for almost 7 years and worked extremely hard during that time. Each job that I have acquired has been a significant improvement, to the extent that I believe I have reached the highest possible level within South Korea.

At 24 years old I started out here as a recent fresh faced graduate and gained employment at a language academy. I remained there for 2 years and was offered a role as a 'Foreign Manager' which I respectfully declined. I then found a job at an After School company, and quickly made myself indispensable to them, recruiting and training teachers as well as other duties outside of my job description. This enabled me to gain a promotion to 'Foreign Manager' within just a few months.

I was very happy in the role but wanted to teach adults, and so I applied for a camp at Ulsan university. Despite stiff competition, I was able to secure I role which I kept for 2 years. My fiancee moved to Seoul and whilst I did my master's degree and built my business, www.eslheaven.com I decided that I would relocate to be nearer her.
I found a fantastic looking job teaching army and air force officers at the Joint Forces Military University in Icheon.

I believe that it is no coincidence that my working conditions have continually improved. My education of a bachelor's and master's degree in English always determined that I would be working within this area. I am a quick learner and adapt very well to every situation. I have gained extensive experience in almost every conceivable teaching role related to ESL and am now confident and proficient within any situation. I believe that above all, a genuine commitment to understanding those I teach and an effort to connect with them and help them thrive have given me the success I have experienced.

I love the freedom I get in the classroom to shape minds and feel that what I am doing is utterly worthwhile and extremely rewarding. I wouldn't change my job for any other, and that much is the complete truth.
